Children's Liturgy of the Word
What is Children’s Liturgy of the Word?
Children’s Liturgy of the Word is celebrated at the 9:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday’s during the school year
for all children ages 3 to 8 who have not yet received First Communion. The children are called forward after the opening prayer, acknowledged by the congregation, then sent forth to hear God’s Word at an age appropriate level. The goal includes helping the children understand the gospel more fully so they can go out and live their lives as Jesus teaches. We want Children to come to know that Mass is a place where God really speaks to them.
What does a Children’s Liturgy of the Word Volunteer do?
The program is led by volunteers whose main responsibility it to prepare a 20 minute experience for the children using the Children’s Lectionary of the Word of God. Additional materials and activities are available to make the experience fun and memorable. The volunteers prepare an inviting prayer space located in the Parish Center. The children will return to the church worship space at the end of the homily.
Will I Receive Training and Support?
The Coordinator of Children’s Liturgy provides training and support. St. Mary’s follows the Diocesan guidelines for Safe Environment and volunteers will be asked to comply with the requirements which include an on-line training module and a disclosure form. On-going support is provided by a Coordinator, who is available at the 9:30 a.m. Mass. Volunteers lead in pairs and the children are in two separate groups; 3-5 year olds and 6-8 year olds.
What is the Time Commitment?
Children’s Liturgy of the Word begins the weekend after Labor Day and runs through May.
The number of times you are responsible for the leading the Word for Children depends upon the number of volunteers in the program. Ideally, we would like to have enough volunteers so that everyone celebrates Children’s Liturgy once every six weeks. In order to proclaim the Gospel to the children, preparation time is necessary. It will vary among volunteers.
