LISTENING FOR MEANING: RENAISSANCE MUSIC FOR THE MASS
The florid interplay of a cappella voices in Josquin de Prez’ Missa Pange Lingua, first composed in Europe around 1500, still resonates through modern cathedrals, chapels, and concert halls today. At the core of this is the body of plainchant, the liturgical texts and melodies of the Catholic Church that continue to mark important moments in the yearly cycles of the church. Learn how to listen to and comprehend the meaning of this music that ultimately formed an integral part of the liturgy that continues to this day. Come hear professors Dr. Jane Hatter and Dr. Christopher LeCluyse speak on the historical development and meaning of music throughout Christian worship. Confession will be heard beforehand in the church from 4:30 - 6:30 PM. Food and drinks will be provided and all are invited to attend! Also come to the 3 PM Latin Mass on Sunday, February 26, to hear the professors provide the music during the liturgy! Please RSVP HERE.
